Intervention in Dementia

Dementia is a term that refers to a group of diseases characterized by the deterioration of cognitive and behavioral performance, impacting the individual’s autonomy.

Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia and one of the main threats associated with advancing age. It’s a slow, silent and devastating disease that still has no cure. However, seeking help at the first symptoms can help minimize some effects of the disease and maintain autonomy and independence.

To minimize the consequences of Dementia, the Dementia Intervention service conducts screenings, neuropsychological assessments and cognitive stimulation and caregiver support sessions.

Screenings for Subjective Memory Complaints

The existence of memory complaints is one of the biggest risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

After analyzing the results of the memory complaint screening, we check if there is a result suggestive of changes, to which we must attribute meaning and that deserve special attention.
We have been conducting these screenings at the end of primary and secondary dementia prevention lectures and at public events.

To do this screening for free, you can contact us.

Cognitive Screening

The cognitive screening aims to identify early signs of Dementia, that is to verify the presence of deficiency signs in some cognitive/mental domains.

This brief neuropsychology screening assessment is conducted by a neuropsychologist, where the existence or absence of a result suggestive of changes is verified, that is, indicative of pre-dementia (cognitive impairment), dementia (Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia), or memory changes due other physical and/or emotional issues.

If you are very forgetful, do a cognitive screening and see if there is any deficit in your cognitive abilities. Contact us!

Neuropsychology Assessment

The neuropsychology assessment is a tool used by neuropsychologists, to identify individuals with cognitive and behavioral changes.

This assessment is carried out using neuropsychological tests and procedures empirically validated for the Portuguese population, being a complementary diagnostic examination of utmost importance, especially in the area of Dementia.

The neuropsychology assessment allows to describe, quantify and characterize variations in cognitive functioning, autonomy and independence, and to outline cognitive profile of the person, in terms of preserved and affected cognitive functions, with a proposal for specialized intervention.

If you have medical indications to do a neuropsychological assessment or if your screenings have shown signs of cognitive changes that may be compatible with a dementing or pre-dementing condition, you can undergo a more thorough evaluation with us and receive help with the diagnosis, follow-up and monitoring of your condition.

Search for help and get an early diagnosis, accompanied and monitored by our neuropsychologist.

Cognitive Stimulation Sessions

After identifying and diagnosing a dementia or pre-dementia condition, the person can resort, beyond pharmacological treatments, to non-pharmacological therapies to slow the progression of disease as much as possible.

Based on the information obtained from the neuropsychological assessment, an individualized intervention plan is defined, which includes individual and/or group cognitive stimulation.

Cognitive stimulation is an intervention aimed at maintaining or improving cognitive functioning and autonomy in a person with dementia, through a set of exercises, activities and tasks that target cognitive functions, contributing to the improvement of their quality of life.

If you have a family member with dementia, you can resort to this non-pharmacological therapy.

Caregiver Support

Dementia doesn’t only affect the patient, but also has a significant impact on the lives of caregivers and family members.

Usually, the family members and caregivers of the person with dementia find themselves in a situation of isolation and physical and emotional exhaustion, showing signs of depression and anxiety.

In this way, we offer a caregivers support session, where we are available to provide clinical counseling and psychological support.
