Senior Dance®: Health and Well-being in Elderly Population

At Human Coop, Senior Dance® is one of the most requested activities and its main goal is to promote health and well-being in the elderly population. Let’s take a look at why this activity is so popular!

How did Senior Dance emerge?

First of all, did you know that this activity was conceived in the 1970s by the German choreographer Ilse Tutt? With the aim of enriching the free time of the older population, this activity combines the power of music with low-impact choreographies, suitable for the physical abilities of the age group. In fact, senior dance is a practice specifically developed for older adults, based on adapted folk and balroom dances. Furthermore, it significantly contributes to physical, cognitive, emotional and social well-being for all participants. As a result, Senior Dance becomes an excellent inclusive tool: accessible and transformative for promoting health in older age.

Senior Dance: two aspects

This practice has two main aspects: standing dances for more active seniors and seated dances, intended for participants with some motor limitations. Both modalities offer simple or complex choreographies and allow for adjustment according to each individual’s abilities. Not only does the variety of rhythms and the diversity of choreographies contribute to maintaining motivation and challenge, but they also stimulate cognitive skills such as attention and memory. Furthermore, they provide a rewarding and safe physical experience.

Benefits of the modality

Among the numerous benefits of Senior Dance are, for example: improvements in mobility, flexibility, balance and coordination. From a cognitive perspective, the practice promotes the development of attention, concentration and memory, while in the socioemotional field, it fosters the joy of self-expression through movement, the sense of belonging to a group and self-esteem. Furthermore, the positive impact of this activity is reflected in sleep quality and emotional well-being in the elderly, providing a space for social interaction and strengthening community bonds.

Curiosities

Senior Dance® is now practiced in several countries, including Germany, Austria, Brazil, Portugal, among others. In Portugal, the modality was introduced by the Danish Birgit Kristensen and gained strength with leaders Ana Santos and Dércia Rodrigues, who represent the country in the International Senior Dance Committee.

Since 2019, Portugal has participated in the international congresses of the modality, being officially integrated into the Committee in 2023. In the same year, the training of new Senior Dance Leaders began through Human Coop, Crl, which has enabled the expansion of the modality throughout the country.

In summary…

Certainly, Senior Dance® is one of the best initiatives to promote health and well-being among the elderly. It is an innovative intervention modality that combines movement, music and socialization to enhance health and well-being in older adults. More than just a physical activity, it is a transformative experience that celebrates life and healthy aging.
